By early 1998 the Poultry industry was in
chaos. In February many chicken producers, including CP Indonesia,
Japfa, Ciomass Poultry and Sierad Feedmill had stopped operating.
Local executives of McDonald's which has 51 restaurants in Indonesia,
declared an emergency; they could not source enough chicken
to make their McNuggets. A few weeks later the USDA warned,
"Indonesia's economic crisis has devastated its poultry
industry. The nation is expected to run out of chicken this
month, posing extreme stability concerns." (Source: Institutional
Investor, May 1999).
In 1994 we first started our operation in Medan and later expanded
to Jakarta in 1996.
The consumption of chicken in Indonesia per capita is 3.5kg
per year and with a population of 210 million, this very low
consumption per capita will have great potential for growth.
Our current monthly production of Day Old Chicks and live broilers
is approximate 3.0 million and I.I million respectively.
As there was shortage of chicken supply in the country, the
selling price of chicken becomes more expensive. It is foreseen
that the supply of chicken meat will be in short supply and
our Indonesian subsidiary will have an opportunity to capture
more market share in the poultry industry.
